Later Review 2026: Is the Social Media Scheduler Worth It?

Later (the social media tool at later.com) scores 2.9/5 in our 2026 review. Strong Instagram calendar, five-platform analytics, and a 180-post Growth cap.

by Subhana Bintay Azam | 5 August 2026

Later, the social media tool at later.com, scores 2.9 out of 5 in this review of Later Social. Choose it if Instagram is your primary channel and your team is one or two people. Skip it if LinkedIn or YouTube reporting matters, or if you bill more than four client accounts. Entry price is $18.75 per month billed annually, after a 14-day trial with no card required.

The single caveat that decides most purchases: Later publishes to eight platforms but reports analytics on only five. LinkedIn, YouTube, and Snapchat get no analytics on any plan, including Scale. This review covers Later Social, the subscription scheduler, only. Later Influence, Later Services, and Mavely are separate products and are not scored here.

Later Review Scorecard: 2.9 Out of 5

PostMonk competes with Later in the social media scheduling category. I scored Later against the same seven weighted dimensions I apply to every scheduler here. The evidence was Later’s live pricing page, its published help documentation, and verified user reviews. The full rubric and weights live on our how we review social media management tools page.

Dimension Weight Score What I found
Scheduling and publishing 25% 3.0/5 Drag-drop calendar, Quick Schedule, and true auto-publish across all eight networks. Deductions: no evergreen recycling, monthly post caps below Scale, notification-only publishing on personal profiles, and reported post failures
Supported channels and integrations 20% 3.0/5 Eight networks published, five with analytics. No public API, no MCP server, and no Zapier, Make, or n8n integration
Content creation 15% 3.5/5 Visual planner is best in class for Instagram grid work. AI is metered at 5 to 100 credits per month, with no bring-your-own-key option
Analytics and reporting 15% 2.5/5 Nothing for LinkedIn, YouTube, or Snapchat. History caps at 3 months on Starter. Custom analytics and listening are Scale-only
Ease of use 10% 3.5/5 Calendar and Quick Schedule are intuitive. The post-block concept, media library search, and expiring profile connections create friction
Pricing and value 10% 2.0/5 Social-set bundling, seat caps of 1 to 4 users, post caps, and annual auto-renewal with a documented refund complaint pattern
Support and reputation 5% 1.5/5 Chatbot-first support, 12-hour response only on Scale, 59% negative support sentiment on Capterra, and a Trustpilot score of 1.6
Overall 100% 2.9/5 (0.25 x 3.0) + (0.20 x 3.0) + (0.15 x 3.5) + (0.15 x 2.5) + (0.10 x 3.5) + (0.10 x 2.0) + (0.05 x 1.5) = 2.875, rounded to 2.9

Verdict: the best visual Instagram planner in the category, sold inside a suite that stops short of the reporting a multi-channel team needs.

What Is Later?

Later (later.com) is a social media scheduling and management platform. It launched as an Instagram-first visual scheduler. It has since grown into a multi-product suite with four distinct offerings.

  • Later Social: The subscription-based scheduling tool this review covers.
  • Later Influence: An enterprise influencer marketing platform requiring a sales demo and custom quote.
  • Later Services: A managed campaign service for brands wanting done-for-you execution.
  • Mavely: An affiliate creator commerce network connecting brands with creators.

Later rebranded from a visual Instagram scheduler into this broader suite after Mavrck acquired it in 2022. The two brands united under the Later name in 2024. G2 awarded Later Social the Leader badge in Spring 2026. Enterprise brands including Nike, Wayfair, and Unilever appear on Later’s own customer list.

That suite is also the source of most confusion about the product. Buyers searching for a scheduler land on marketing pages built for influencer campaigns. For how the scheduler itself compares across the broader field, see our roundup of the best social media management tools.

Who Is Later Social For?

Later Social fits three audiences well. Outside these segments, the tool’s gaps produce consistent friction.

In-House Social Media Managers

In-house social media managers at small to mid-market companies are well served by Later. The typical workflow is simple. Batch-schedule the week’s content in one or two hours, review the Instagram grid preview, then walk away. Capterra reviewers rated time saving 100% positive across 38 mentions, and the visual planner 97% positive across 31 mentions.

This use case works best when the brand is Instagram-first. It breaks down once LinkedIn reporting or reliable multi-channel parity becomes a requirement.

Freelancers and Small Agencies

Freelancers and small agencies managing three or four clients can get genuine value from Later. Approval workflows, external reviewer comments, and custom roles all arrive on the Growth plan. External reviewers do not need a Later login, which removes a common client-approval headache.

The caveat is cost. Each additional brand can force another social set, and Growth includes only two. Collaboration depth is also thin: the independent reviewer copywritersnow.com flagged limited collaboration as a clear weakness. Agencies past four or five clients will feel the pricing pressure first.

Instagram-First and Visual-Led Brands

Brands where Instagram is the primary channel are Later’s strongest fit. The drag-drop grid preview shows how the feed will look before a post publishes. Instagram depth also runs further than most rivals offer. You get location and user tagging, first comment on auto-publish, and product tagging on Growth and above. Capterra’s drag-drop satisfaction rate was 100% positive across 25 mentions.

This fit narrows when TikTok or Pinterest matter as much as Instagram. It disappears when LinkedIn is a primary publishing channel, because Later reports no LinkedIn analytics at all.

Later Social Features

Later Social publishes to eight platforms: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, Threads, and Snapchat. Feature depth across these platforms varies considerably. Below is the breakdown by category.

Visual Content Calendar and Quick Schedule

The drag-drop visual calendar is Later’s strongest feature and the reason most teams sign up. You drag a post onto any calendar slot and see an Instagram grid preview before anything publishes. Quick Schedule fills a whole week of recurring slots at once, which is where the batch-scheduling time savings actually come from.

Capterra ratings back this up consistently. Time saving rates 100% positive across 38 mentions, and drag-drop 100% positive across 25 mentions. One reviewer captured it plainly:

“I like Later’s calendar layout, it makes it easy to see where your posts are scheduled” (Capterra).

The media library is the weaker half of the same workflow. Storage is unlimited, with caps of 20 MB per photo and 512 MB per video. At scale, retrieval becomes the problem, and one Capterra reviewer put it bluntly:

“the media center is a mess to find your content in” (Capterra).

Publishing and Auto-Post Capabilities

Later auto-publishes to all eight supported networks, including Instagram Reels and Stories. Most third-party reviews get this wrong, and Later’s own Stories documentation spells out the real conditions.

Four conditions shape how Instagram content actually publishes.

  • Instagram Stories: auto-publish works on business profiles only. Creator profiles fall back to notification publishing.
  • Instagram Reels: auto-publish works on business and creator profiles, but it must be switched on first. Reels scheduled from Android are capped at 90 seconds for auto-publish.
  • Personal Instagram and TikTok profiles: no auto-publish at all. These are notification-only.
  • Stories scheduling is desktop-only. You cannot schedule a Story from Later’s mobile apps.

Notification publishing means Later sends a push notification at the scheduled time. You open the Later app and tap to finish the post. For a creator-profile account posting daily Stories, that is a manual step every single day.

One overlooked mechanic decides whether the post caps bite: Later counts a post against your monthly quota when you schedule it, not when it publishes. A post that fails, or one you cancel after scheduling, has already consumed quota. Posts move through draft, queued, scheduled, published, failed, or partially published states, and only the first transition is billed.

Reliability is the genuine complaint here, not the publishing model. Capterra reviewers report that connections to social platforms need refreshing periodically, which is by design: Later’s profile connections expire for security and must be re-authorized. Reddit threads from 2025 describe posts that freeze or fail outright.

LinkedIn publishing also receives secondary treatment. One Capterra reviewer was direct:

“doesn’t publish to LinkedIn and its publishing to Twitter and Facebook isn’t great” (Capterra).

Later’s Link in Bio is a customizable landing page linked from an Instagram, TikTok, or Snapchat profile. It ships on every plan, including the free tier, with no separate subscription.

The feature set runs deeper than most bundled link-in-bio tools.

  • Up to 5 links per Instagram feed post, and 1 per TikTok post
  • Shoppable product links, plus affiliate links through a connected Mavely account
  • Linktree import that carries over the profile, social links, and design
  • Mailchimp form connection, email collection, and Google Analytics
  • Custom title tag and meta description, with no Later branding

Later attributes over 1 billion tracked transactions to Link in Bio across its network. One gate worth knowing: TikTok bio links require a TikTok Business account with more than 1,000 followers. For Instagram-first brands running shoppable content, this is a real standalone value-add at no extra cost.

Analytics and Reporting

Later provides built-in analytics for five platforms: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, and Threads. Later’s analytics page lists those five. It provides none for LinkedIn, YouTube, or Snapchat, despite publishing to all three, and its help center confirms the exclusions. That gap holds on every plan, including Scale.

History retention is the second constraint, and it is tier-gated hard.

Plan Analytics history
Starter Up to 3 months
Growth Up to 1 year
Scale Up to 2 years

Three months on Starter means you cannot run a year-over-year comparison without upgrading. Pinterest analytics caps at 3 months on every plan regardless of tier. Custom analytics, competitive benchmarking against 20 rivals, and social listening are all Scale-only. The listening tool then pulls from Instagram and TikTok data alone.

Capterra reviewers reach the same conclusion from the other direction.

“almost none analytics in the lower tiers” (Capterra).

“to expensive to just upgrade for that aspect [analytics]” (Capterra).

AI Caption Writer and Content Ideas

Later’s AI tools are credit-metered rather than unlimited. Credits reset monthly and vary by plan.

Plan AI credits per month Extra credits available
Starter 5 No
Growth 50 Yes, $3.75 per 100
Scale 100 Yes, $3.75 per 100

One credit buys one caption generation, or one batch of three content ideas. At five credits per month, Starter’s AI is close to decorative for an active publishing schedule, and Starter cannot buy more. Growth’s 50 credits cover moderate use but not a heavy content operation.

Later offers no bring-your-own-key option. You cannot connect an OpenAI, Anthropic, or Gemini key to route AI through your own account, so the credit ceiling is the only lever. AI-powered Best Time to Post is included and covers Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok.

Social Inbox and Conversations

Later calls its social inbox “Conversations,” and it arrives on the Growth plan and above. It covers three networks.

  • Instagram: DMs, comments, and post mentions or tags
  • Facebook: DMs and comments
  • TikTok: comments only

There is no inbox for LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Threads, or Snapchat. The independent reviewer copywritersnow.com described it as an underwhelming social inbox, and the three-network scope is why. If your community lives on LinkedIn, Conversations does nothing for you.

Later Influence, EdgeAI, and the Enterprise Suite

Later Influence is a separate enterprise product for influencer campaign management. It is not part of the self-serve Later Social subscription and requires a demo and a custom quote.

EdgeAI is Later’s predictive intelligence layer powering the Influence side, not a feature you can buy. Creator AEO is an AI search visibility program sold through a strategist. Mavely is the affiliate creator network that connects into Later Social’s Link in Bio.

For the typical scheduler buyer, these products are out of scope entirely. They dominate later.com’s marketing and routinely cause confusion about what a Later Social subscription actually includes.

Getting Started With Later: Setup and Ease of Use

Getting from signup to a scheduled post took me five steps across three surfaces. Later is easy to learn for Instagram work and slower to learn for everything else.

The documented path runs like this. Create the account, then authorize each social profile through that platform’s own login screen, which is where Later’s publishing permissions come from. Upload media into the Media Library. Drag it onto a calendar slot in the Visual Planner. Write the caption and confirm the time.

Two things slow that path down on a real account. Profile connections expire on a schedule and must be re-authorized, so a workflow that ran fine last month can stall. Instagram Stories can only be scheduled from the desktop app. A mobile-first social manager has to switch machines for the format Later is best known for.

The vocabulary is the other friction point. Later organizes the calendar around post blocks rather than a simple queue. One Capterra reviewer called the post-block dynamic for scheduling very confusing. Access Groups add a second concept: each group carries its own Media Library and Calendar, and Starter allows exactly one.

If you have used a visual scheduler before, you will be productive in Later within an afternoon. If you are switching from a queue-based tool, budget a week before the post-block model stops fighting you.

Later Pricing

Later Social has three paid tiers billed annually or monthly, and annual billing saves 25%. Prices below are the annual rate, verified on later.com/pricing in August 2026.

Plan Annual (per month) Social sets Users Posts per profile per month
Starter $18.75 1 (8 profiles) 1 30
Growth $37.50 2 (16 profiles) 2 180
Scale $82.50 6 (48 profiles) 4 Unlimited

Two limits do more damage than the headline price. Starter allows one user, so a second person on the account requires the Growth plan. Growth’s 180-post cap sounds generous until you remember posts are counted at scheduling time, not at publish time.

What Is a Social Set?

A social set is one profile per supported platform, bundled together. One social set gives you one Instagram account, one TikTok account, one Facebook page, and so on across all eight platforms.

Two Instagram accounts therefore require two social sets. That bundling means you pay for seven platform slots you may never use, purely to add a second account on one platform. One Capterra reviewer captured the agency version of this problem:

“It can get expensive really quickly if you’re a social media manager with a lot of clients” (Capterra).

Add-Ons and the Real Agency Cost

Growth and Scale let you buy past the caps, which changes the value calculation. Starter cannot buy any add-ons.

Add-on Price Available on
Extra social set $11.25 per month Growth, Scale
Extra user $3.75 per month Growth, Scale
Extra 100 AI credits $3.75 per month Growth, Scale

Run the numbers for a five-client agency. Growth at $37.50 covers two clients, and three more social sets add $33.75, landing at $71.25 per month before any extra seats. At that point the Scale plan at $82.50 covers six clients and four users, and it is the better buy. Qualified nonprofits get 50% off the annual Growth plan, which is one of the few genuinely generous terms Later publishes.

Free Plan and Trial

Later’s 14-day free trial is the evaluation path that matters. It requires no credit card and includes full access to every paid feature, so you can test Scale-only analytics before committing.

A free tier also exists, and Link in Bio is included on it. Later no longer describes the free plan on its pricing page, and its post limits are not published there. Treat the trial as the real way to evaluate the product.

Billing and Refund Complaints

Later’s annual subscription auto-renews, and this is where its reputation is weakest. Trustpilot’s later.com listing sat at 1.6 out of 5 across 347 reviews as of July 2026, against a G2 score of 4.5. That split between a buyer-review platform and a consumer-complaint platform is itself the signal.

The dominant complaint pattern is annual renewal charged without adequate advance notice. Capterra carries the same theme, with one reviewer warning readers to be careful with the refund policy. Later publishes no money-back guarantee, only the 14-day trial. Read the subscription and refund terms before you pay.

What Later Users Actually Say

Sentiment splits sharply by platform, which is the most useful thing about Later’s review profile. Buyer-review sites rate it well, and complaint-driven platforms rate it badly.

Platform Rating Reviews
G2 4.5 out of 5 384
Capterra 4.4 out of 5 398
Trustpilot 1.6 out of 5 347

Most praised across G2 and Capterra: ease of use, time saving, and the visual planner. Most criticized: support responsiveness, analytics depth on lower tiers, and pricing escalation. Three excerpts show the range:

Positive: “I like Later’s calendar layout, it makes it easy to see where your posts are scheduled” (Capterra, social media manager).

Mixed: “great for influencers or businesses that use Instagram and TikTok heavily… underwhelming for a social media team” (copywritersnow.com, independent review, 4.2 out of 5).

Negative: “almost none analytics in the lower tiers” (Capterra, marketing user).

Support is the weakest verified dimension. Capterra sentiment on slow support runs 59% negative across 37 mentions. Later’s support model explains why. A 24/7 chatbot named Neo handles the front line on every plan, and human replies arrive by email. A 12-hour response commitment applies only on Scale.

Later Pros and Cons

Weighed against the seven scored dimensions, Later’s strengths and limits fall out cleanly.

Pros Cons
Drag-drop visual calendar is best in class for Instagram grid planning (Capterra 100% positive, 38 mentions) Analytics cover 5 of 8 published platforms; nothing for LinkedIn, YouTube, or Snapchat on any plan
Instagram grid preview shows feed appearance before publishing (97% positive, 31 mentions) Analytics history caps at 3 months on Starter, and custom reports are Scale-only
True auto-publish across all 8 networks, including Reels on business and creator profiles Stories auto-publish requires a business profile, and Stories schedule from desktop only
Link in Bio included on every plan, free tier included, with Linktree import and shoppable links Social-set bundling forces paying for seven unused platform slots to add one account
Deep Instagram tooling: first comment, location and user tagging, product tagging on Growth Seat caps of 1, 2, and 4 users push small teams up a tier on headcount alone
Approval workflows with external reviewers who need no Later login (Growth and above) AI metered at 5, 50, or 100 credits per month, with no bring-your-own-key option
14-day trial with full feature access and no credit card required No public API, no MCP server, and no Zapier, Make, or n8n integration
Nonprofits qualify for 50% off the annual Growth plan Support rated 59% negative on Capterra; 12-hour response only on Scale
G2 4.5 out of 5 across 384 reviews, and Leader badge in Spring 2026 Annual auto-renewal with a documented refund complaint pattern (Trustpilot 1.6)
Unlimited media storage, Canva export, and a Chrome save extension Posts count against the monthly cap when scheduled, not when published

Who Should NOT Use Later?

Later is the wrong tool for several clearly defined situations. If any of the following describe you, read our Later alternatives list instead.

  • Brands where LinkedIn, YouTube, or Snapchat performance is reported on. Later publishes to all three and measures none of them, on every plan including Scale.
  • Agencies billing more than five clients. Scale covers six social sets and four users. Past that, extra sets at $11.25 and seats at $3.75 stack fast, and no white-label client reporting exists on Later’s agency page.
  • Creator-profile accounts posting daily Stories. Stories auto-publish needs a business profile, so creator accounts tap a phone notification every day.
  • Mobile-first social managers. Instagram Stories cannot be scheduled from Later’s mobile apps at all.
  • Operators running AI-native or automated workflows. Later’s partners page lists no Zapier, Make, or n8n integration, and Later publishes no customer-facing API or MCP server.
  • Heavy AI users on a budget. Starter’s five monthly credits cannot be topped up, and no plan supports your own model key.

Later Review Verdict

Later Social earns 2.9 out of 5: a genuinely excellent Instagram planner wrapped in a suite that under-delivers on reporting and over-charges on scale. Here is how that resolves into a decision.

Choose Later If

Four conditions make Later the right pick.

  • Instagram is your primary channel and grid aesthetics drive your planning workflow
  • Your team is one or two people, so the Starter or Growth seat caps never bind
  • You publish from an Instagram business profile, which enables Stories auto-publish
  • You want a capable Link in Bio page bundled at no extra cost

Look Elsewhere If

Four conditions push you toward a different scheduler.

  • LinkedIn, YouTube, or Snapchat performance appears in your reporting
  • You manage more than five client accounts and need white-label reports
  • You want AI that runs on your own model key instead of a monthly credit allowance
  • You need API, webhook, or AI-agent access to your scheduling tool

Later is a capable Instagram scheduler that has not grown into the all-in-one social media management platform its marketing describes. For the Instagram-first team it was built for, that is still a good trade at $18.75 per month.

A Later Alternative Worth Considering

Later built something genuinely useful for Instagram-first teams, and the visual calendar and grid preview are real advantages. If that is your world and your budget fits the Growth plan, Later works.

But a specific type of Later leaver keeps showing up. They hit the analytics ceiling, watched the cost climb with each client added, or wanted their scheduler to answer to an AI agent. If that describes you, the tool built around those gaps is PostMonk.

PostMonk runs AI on your own key. Connect an OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, OpenRouter, or DeepSeek key on any tier and pay your provider directly, with no monthly credit ceiling. The Pro and Agency tiers also ship a native MCP server, so Claude or ChatGPT can read your queue, draft posts, and schedule them directly.

Pricing is one-time rather than recurring: $29 for Starter, $59 for Pro, and $99 for Agency, with no auto-renewal and no per-social-set escalation.

Where Later is genuinely ahead: PostMonk has no Link in Bio page, no social listening, and no unified social inbox. If bundled link-in-bio commerce or brand monitoring is central to your workflow, Later covers ground PostMonk does not.

FAQs

Is Later a legit company?

Yes. Later is a mature, well-funded company that merged with Mavrck in 2022 and unified under the Later brand in 2024. G2 awarded it Leader status in Spring 2026, and enterprise brands including Nike and Unilever appear on its customer list. The billing process is the weak point: Trustpilot documents a persistent complaint pattern around annual auto-renewal. Read the subscription terms before paying.

Which is better, Later or Buffer?

It depends on your primary channel. Later is stronger for Instagram visual grid planning, thanks to its drag-drop calendar, grid preview, and bundled Link in Bio. Buffer is stronger for multi-platform work, with broader analytics coverage and a per-channel price that stays predictable as you scale. Our Buffer review scores it 3.5 out of 5, against Later’s 2.9.

How much does Later cost per month?

Later Social costs $18.75 per month for Starter, $37.50 for Growth, and $82.50 for Scale, all billed annually. Monthly billing runs about 25% higher. Extra social sets cost $11.25 per month and extra users $3.75 per month, on Growth and Scale only. The 14-day trial requires no credit card.

Is Later Social worth it?

For Instagram-first teams of one or two people: yes, at Starter or Growth. The visual calendar delivers real time savings, and Capterra reviewers rate it 100% positive on that dimension. For agencies past five clients, or brands that report on LinkedIn or YouTube performance: no. Analytics gaps and social-set pricing erode the value quickly.

Does Later auto-post to Instagram?

Yes, with conditions. Standard image and video posts auto-publish on schedule. Instagram Reels auto-publish on business and creator profiles once the setting is enabled. Instagram Stories auto-publish on business profiles only, and creator profiles receive a push notification to post manually. Personal Instagram profiles cannot auto-publish at all.

Does Later have a free plan?

Yes, and Link in Bio is included on it. Later no longer publishes the free plan’s limits on its pricing page, so its post allowance is not documented. The 14-day free trial is the better evaluation path: it needs no credit card and includes full access to every paid feature, including Scale-only analytics.

What platforms does Later support?

Later Social publishes to eight platforms: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, Threads, and Snapchat. Built-in analytics cover five of those: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Pinterest, and Threads. LinkedIn, YouTube, and Snapchat receive no analytics on any plan, including Scale.

Is Later good for agencies?

Later markets itself as the number one agency tool, and the reality is mixed. Approval workflows, external reviewer comments, and custom roles all work well from Growth upward. Cost is the constraint: Scale caps at six social sets and four users, extra sets cost $11.25 each, and no white-label client reporting exists. Agencies past five clients typically outgrow it.

Does Later have an API or MCP server?

No. Later publishes no customer-facing REST API, no webhooks, and no Model Context Protocol server. Its partners page lists no Zapier, Make, or n8n integration either. The only APIs Later documents are the social platforms’ own APIs, which Later uses internally to publish on your behalf.
